PARADE TO HONOR NEW LONDON’S STAR ATHLETES

Come on out Aug. 15 to honor Olympian, India Pagan, and Babe Ruth and Little League State Champs

Our first Olympian. Babe Ruth and Little League State Champions. New London has a lot to celebrate!

Come on out and show your Whaler Pride Sunday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. in a parade with (for our own) NL’s India Pagan, a Summer Olympian athlete (Puerto Rico Women’s Basketball); NL’s Babe Ruth (13-15) baseball state champions; and NL’s Little League (11-13) baseball state champions.

The parade kicks off from State Street (at Washington Street), and the route will continue down State Street to its conclusion at The Parade where there will be a ceremony honoring our Superstar athletes. “New London is a city of champions, and we are proud to continue that tradition and honor our first Olympian India Pagan and our Babe Ruth and Little League State Champion teams,” Mayor Michael Passero said.

Pagan, 22, made her Olympic debut in the Tokyo Olympics, playing basketball for Team Puerto Rico, representing the island where her parents grew up. A player for Stony Brook University, she took part in the 2019 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, and 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, where she won a silver medal. Pagan, who played for the New London High School girls’ basketball team from 2014-17, is a 2017 graduate of the Marine Science Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut.

The New London Babe Ruth 15 Baseball team won the State Championship and went to the Championship game of the New England tournament. New London’s Little League, which offers a transition for players between the standard Little League field size of 46-foot pitching distance and 60-foot base paths, defeated Fairfield in the finals.

“Our Little League State Champs, our Babe Ruth State Champs and our Hometown Hero Olympian India Pagan exemplifies who we are as a city, New London, the City of Champions,” Efrain Dominguez, Jr., Council President stated.
